Coffee with? A personal view about milk

Recent advances in producing new alternatives to cow’s milk has been widely celebrated across the UK, particularly for people (like me) who like to drink coffee with milk, but who are trying to reduce cholesterol. I’ve been doing some simple taste comparison experiments with cow’s milk and some of the alternatives. This is NOT a scientifically valid experiment, and the results are based purely on my personal observations, experience and preferences.

Every day last month I’ve made my own morning coffee using various combinations of many of the different types of semi-skimmed cow’s milk and milk alternatives.

We have a preference for avoiding chemical nasties in everything we eat and drink, and we use the Yuka app (available https://yuka.io/en/ on Google play store and Apple App store) to scan each product, which for this experiment gave me some big surprises – some plant-based milk alternative products do contain things I’d rather not drink and a side-by-side comparison of two types of oat milk analysed by the Yuka app, with the left one showing some negatives and an overall score of 49/100 (so I’m not going to be drinking that), and the right one really looking good with no negatives and an overall score of 88/100.

I will be careful to avoid some specific milk alternative products as a result of this – both these milk alternatives are available in UK Supermarkets:

Conclusions

My personal preference is to have milk with my coffee using a 50:50 mixture of semi-skimmed cow’s milk with oat milk. When properly foamed, this mixture gives a lovely texture in the mouth; has less cholesterol than 100 cow’s milk, and I prefer the mixture to just pure milk of any type.
